The Team

Shelby Mertes
Founder and Executive Director

Shelby Mertes is Founder and Executive Director of The Human

Survival Project, a global grassroots organization working to

transform the United Nations so humanity can manage its existential

threats. He also hosts The Human Survival Podcast, interviewing

leading experts on global risks and solutions.

Shelby brings many years of policy advocacy experience to this

work. From 2001-2013, he worked at the Partnership for Strong Communities in Connecticut, helping secure millions of dollars in state and federal funding for affordable housing, and fundamentally changing zoning laws across the state to encourage more mixed-income housing. His work there included lobbying officials at all levels of government, coalition building, research and writing, public speaking, and hosting a radio show. During his tenure, affordable housing and homelessness moved from ignored fringe issues to the center of policymakers' concerns.

The Human Survival Project emerged from years of intense research into catastrophic risks facing humanity. That research convinced Shelby that most people don't understand how urgent our global situation has become, inspiring him to channel his policy experience toward humanity's biggest challenges.

Shelby's varied life experience includes work as a teacher, home improvement contractor, rideshare driver and various other roles that have deepened his understanding of the human experience. He earned a B.A. in Political Science and Psychology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and later, graduate-level certification to teach high school social studies.

Based in Massachusetts, Shelby spends his free time in nature, values rich relationships with family and friends, practices emotional and spiritual growth, and is obsessed with music.
